Mozilla is on its way to launch super cheap smart phones featuring its web-focused Firefox Operating System. These devices are expected to start under 25 USD – thus making them a stiff competition to feature phones. They are targeting regions where the penetration of smart phones is not high, and the market is very cost sensitive such as most countries in Latin America. These phones will be using HTML5 apps mostly as the Firefox OS is an open source operating system that has been developed to run apps built using CSS, HTML and JavaScript.
What Mozilla is targeting is an impressive challenge in itself. If successfully executed, a whole new ecosystem of Cross platform mobile app development will come up in these growing markets. Apart from feature phones, Firefox running phones can be a threat to entry level Android phones that a few Indian and Chinese makers are successfully selling. HTML5 based web apps will be a green model as those will be compatible with a large number of devices and operating systems, thus bringing cross platform-ness to a wider audience.
The pressure will definitely be on Nokia who has been the king of feature phones till now. Firefox OS may not give a true smart phone experience, but the threat is something Nokia needs to consider seriously.
